Dear Bob,

In a move right out of the Karl Rove playbook, the Republican
Congressional Leadership is trying to rally the right-wing base
to the polls this November with a direct attack on equality for
lesbians and gay men.

The tactic is a familiar one, and this year it comes in the
form of an encore effort to enshrine inequity in the
Constitution through the so-called 'Marriage Protection
Amendment' (formerly the Federal Marriage Amendment). Despite
its deceptive new name, the only thing it would protect is
discrimination.

Proponents of the marriage amendment don't have the votes they
need in the Senate to pass it, but we still need to join
together to make our collective voice loud and powerful so that
this victory is the start of something much bigger.

Between now and November, People For will be on the frontlines
of the fight for fairness across America. We are working against
anti-gay ballot measures in the states, while also supporting
progressive ballot and legislative measures that would expand
basic protections for LGBT Americans. We ask you to join us in
this fight so that together, we can once and for all beat back
the Right's decades-long attempt to demonize Americans, exploit
people's fears and prejudices and tarnish the Constitution for
political gain.

If you have not done so already, please register your opposition
to this assault on not just the Constitution, but also on our
values and our fellow Americans by telling your senators to reject
the so-called 'Marriage Protection Amendment' at

While I might have some issues with them (as I also do the Democrats), I think too highly of the Republicans to think that they would all want what Karl Rove wants.

Chris it is so very complicated over here. The reality of our voting demographics is that the people who are opposed to gays have rights are a voting majority. However, we as a goverment are a republic which means elected represensatives actually have to make draft and pass legistation for it to exist. The populace can make recommendations and such but not actually write or pass legislation. The legislators, respond to the voters not the public which is smart cause those are the people who put them in office.

One can sign online petions and send emails all day long but if the voting demographics suggest that a homosexual marriage ban is what the voters, aka those who actually go the polls want than many politicians will do just that. I am touched you have an interest in human rights violations in my country. If only the majority of people living in here had 1/4 of the passion that you, many of the canandians, and aussies have on here.....

I wonder what it says about our nation when more people apparently voted for the "American Idol" than in our elections? (I could be wrong on that, though, since it was mentioned on the local news.)

Well, way I see it people are people no matter where they live. Dealing with something in one country increases the chances of a domino effect.
