I was thinking before about the old riddle thingie, if a tree falls and there is nobody there, does it make a sound? The answer being no because 'sound' is created by the ear from the vibrations. The vibrations are made by the falling tree, but there is no ear to process it as a noise.
This got me thinking even more, can this be applied to other senses? For example... If there is a table in a room, but the room has nobody in it, does the table actually 'exist'. The things we are see are images created by our eyes with light reflections and things like that (I only just scraped a pass in biology so my knowledge of how the eye works is limited! ). So, just like in the old riddle, if there are no eyes there to turn the light into images, does the table 'exist'? My brain hurts. ![]()

that depends entirely how you want to use the word 'exist'.
can we know anything about the table outside our senses (or another persons senses)? no. that does indeed have implications, but it doesn't mean that the table suddenly won't be there when you enter the room.

This is a famous analogy sometimes used to illustrate paradox in science called 'Schroedinger's cat'

what we can affirm exists is only what we sense at the time

So, I guess, using that line of logic, the table still exists. If the only eyes in the same room as the table are blind they can't SEE the table or process it through visual means. However, they CAN feel and describe the table because it takes up space. If you can't see something it still exists...especially if the reason you can't see it is because you are in the dark...stubbing your toe is a great check of that fact. ![]()
