Or does one single element of non-truth in a statement make the entre statement false?
So, for example, I say to you, "I have a cup full of blue liquid. It's Gatorade." But when you taste it, you say, "This is just dyed water!" Did I lie completely, or did I just tell you a half-truth? I indeed had a cup full of blue liquid, but it wasn't Gatorade. What do you think?

you lied.
the first statement was true - i have a cup full of blue liquid. but in context, i was lead to believe the blue liquid was gatorade (which i guess must be some kind of yank juice ) which it in fact wasn't. it's all lies, lies, lies.

It depends on how we define truth. If it is a fact in an empirically provable sense, then a half truth is a lie. When we add super-empirical mythological elements to truth such that some of the myth has interaction with empirically provable facts, then we don't have a half-truth. We have a myth.

a half-truth would be a statement that is true to some extent, but not entirely - like 'i can play the saxophone'. while i can certainly play it, i can't play anything that sounds like music. the statement leads you to believe that i can in fact play music, but that isn't necessarily what i said.
ok, time for bed. ![]()

Psalm 116:11 (New International Version)
11 And in my dismay I said, "All men are liars."

Ok here is my answer. There is one absolute infinite truth, however being finite little critters within a finite (i.e. ultimately quantifiable) universe, we only ever know a minute fraction of that reality. Does that qualify as 'partial-truth'?

Something either is, or is not, true. The liquid in the cup is either blue, or it isn't. It is either gatorade, or it isn't. It is either blue gatorade, or it isn't.
