Homophobia (ritual, homosexuality, spiritual, sexuality, holiday)

I was saddened to see my fellow homosexuals and allies use the word "homophobe" loosely.

Homophobia is an irrational and distorted view of homosexuality and of homosexual individuals. As with other "phobias," it may be symptomatic of deeper psychological disorders. In everyday parlance, the term has come to mean anxiety, disgust, anger, and hatred toward homosexuals

Homophobia is a societal pathology that has become codified in our laws and social policies, canonized in our religious practices, and internalized in many lesbian and gay youths and adults. So few individuals in our culture lack homophobia that we are left to characterize individuals based on its varying strength, not its presence or absence.

The term is actually used by bombthrowers for all the above, plus: disagreement politically with, disagreement spiritually with, and apathy towards. There are no doubt homophobic people alive- people who have an irrational fear of homosexuals. Throwing this word around as a dissmissive device of someone's differing viewpoint is inexcusable. There are plenty of gay bigots out there. Dropping the "bigot" card when someone disagrees with certain issues will hurt the gay agenda, not help it.

I have never thought of it, and had a problem understanding Pah at first; I guess this is on a parallel with 'inverted snobbery'; it makes sense, actually.

I would say, at the most you are inflicted by a bad case of pragmatism, and/or practicality. Im not a doctor, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night!

The author did but I have seen a homophobic reaction, as he described it, from gays and lesbians toward the bisexual and transgendered communities.

As strong as I am for gay rights, I don't think I want to to see Brokeback Mountain. That makes me homophobic as well.

Then use the term, as I hope many others will, in meaning an irrational and distorted view of homosexuality.

I think alot of men are homophobic towards gay men. They won't sit next to them, talk down to them, make fun of them... But you take that same man an put him in the same room as 2 lesbians. This same person who runs down gay men, claiming what a sin it is would jump at the opportunity to hop into bed with these 2 lesbians. Not only homophobic, but hypocritical.

But what does this reaction of gays and lesbians toward bisexuals and transgendereds have to do with my quote that you used.

I don't think that not wanting to see Brokeback Mountain makes you (or anyone) homophobic, Pah. Frankly, I have no interest in the film because it just looked like it would be a boring movie - and I'm not a movie person, really. I don't think it makes me homophobic because I have no desire to watch Brokeback Mountain. It's a movie. I think that using the word homophobe to label someone who didn't want to see Brokeback Mountain is stretching. If I choose to watch a horror movie over some romantic comedy does that mean I hate romance and fun? I hope not - and I don't think it does.
