Reversible birth control Pill for men moves closer
http://news.scotsman.com/health.cfm?id=634752006 LYNDSAY MOSS A MALE contraceptive drug which is reversible within three and a half months could be available in the near future, researchers said yesterday. The prospect of a male contraceptive similar to the female Pill has been on the cards for some time, with numerous trials taking place around the world. Now American and Australian researchers writing in the Lancet have found that men's fertility returns within a few months of stopping hormone-based contraceptives, which should reassure those concerned such treatment could decrease sperm count permanently. The UK trials of a male contraceptive have involved combining an implant under the skin with regular injections to lower sperm production. This article: http://news.scotsman.com/health.cfm?id=634752006 Last updated: 28-Apr-06 01:51 BST I saw a programme this morning, in which they were talking about this (naturally, women saying that men would never be able to remember to take the pill each day -because "We never know which day of the week it is! ".The point I was thinking is that IMO, this is not necessarilly good news...........ought'nt we be encouraging the young to use a barrier form of contraception (because of STD's) ? What do you think?

As is the case with all contraceptives, it does nothing for STD's. I can't imagine the Religious Right opposing it's use except that it will promote promiscuity. I'd take it if I were younger and not contraindicated by my other meds.

My 1st thought was it's a good thing, but Michel, you bring up a valid point. I know there are STD's you can get using a condom, it just lowers the risk. Probably here in the U.S. it will be by script only. Which means expensive. On one hand you have increased STD's, on the other you have less unwanted pregnancies. Hard call.

It's my hunch the men most likely to use this contraceptive will be married or in committed relationships. But I don't see its being widely used by men who judge themselves only likely to have ocassional casual sex. In the first place, the pill will probably be expensive, and in the second place, taking it every day without much prospect of sex is more of a hassel than just keeping a condom handy.
Of course, once this pill is released, the most frequent closing time lie in bars around the nation, after "You're gorgeous!" will become "I'm on the pill!" Women beware!

As I don't like contraceptives all together for reasons I doubt I can convince most, I do believe any additions to contraception isn't a good thing.
