As stated, do we need feminists? Is the egalitarian battle pretty much wrapped up?
Or are women still denied equal rights? I'm curious if anyone (i'm afraid i'm mostly asking westerners) thinks that women are now truly "equals" to men. If there are any unequal laws still on the books (individual state laws are no doubt to bring a laugh or two) or is this now a culture war. For example, should a feminst support a modern american female pop star if all she does is (almost literally) objectify herself sexually? Yes, it's her right, but is she advancing the cause or sending it back to the stone age? And, i hate to have to say it, rap videos. Is it right to passively accept (or work for) an entertainment super-industry that has largely equated women to money? Or are they right? |

Wow! what a topic! You should take up a less dangerous hobby, like defusing bombs......
I think you will find that women haven't got equality. In some aspects, they do so; maybe in some aspects their equality has taken them past the goal posts; in others, they will never be able to achieve equality. One of the things I find sad is the number of times I hear 'we have to work so much harder than men, to prove that we can compete' - I dare say that is true, a lot of the time. ....................."For example, should a feminst support a modern american female pop star if all she does is (almost literally) objectify herself sexually? The answer to that is there is no right, and no wrong. For some it is right, but for others, it could never be so; just as men will sometimes use thei male attributes to earn money; as far as I am concerned, that is almost on a par with prostitution. The only thing I can say, is that when I was working (back in the early 70's) there was a girl who worked where I did; I will never foirget the day when the boss suggested that she became a cashier (a teller for you guys) - oh, no, she said I'll ruin my nails - I've just had a manicure (and that is the truth) - I got the job as cashier, while she went on ahead of mr. I bumped into her in another branch twenty years later - and that short cut, early on in our careers had paid off for her; she was quite ahead of me - but she was good at her job - I won't deny that. I did wonder though, what would have happened had she been a man............. ![]()

I hate it how feminist pick and chose what laws to fight for and abolish, which gives all women "cherry picked" laws. Equal rights mean everyone, regardless of sex, has everything equal, both good and bad. I think Feminist try to make so women have all good laws and no bad ones. I wonder when they will try to make so women don't have to pay taxes?

somehow I don't think that one generation means the problem is fixed...
Women still don't have equality in pay and responsibility.... There is still some work to be done, and vigalance to be kept. wa:do

What does not paying taxes have to do with equality?
Feminism at its core is about equality. Since we are not equal, we still need it. I'm not sure we ever will be equal, but it's a good thing to strive for. I completely agree that women should have to sign up for the draft. |

I completely agree, Jensa. I'm not only for feminism, but I'm for equality for all. (Men, women, people of all races, non-religions and religions and all backgrounds.) Yes, that does include women signing up for the draft, and if I thought it was gonna help me get paid as much as a man for doing the same work, I'd be camping out on the doorstep of Capital Hill right now.
LW, are you particularly angry with the feminist movement for some reason? It seems like you're... unhappy with the topic.
