Default Legal Drinking Age

Inspired by another thread about underage drinking, I'm curious to see what everyone thinks about the legal drinking age. I live in England, and over here, it's 18, which too me, seems quite reasonable, and i find it strange that it's 21 in the USA. Anyhow, I'm wondering what everyone thinks should be the legal age at which a person is legally able to purchase alcohol.

It is quite general. I know that in some countries, it depends what you are buying. I have heard of some countries whereby you can buy beer or wine at 16, but spirits and liquor are 18+ drinks. I'm keeping it fairly generalised though.

18 is good. I always found it stupid that some one could serve in the military but not drink alchohol.

One can smoke at 18 but not drink? I'm sorry, that never made sense to me.

Younger ages coupled with stronger education will help enforce the use of alcohol not as a drink to get drunk, but rather, as a social drink. I'm not saying let them get wasted, I'm saying teach them to drink responsibly at a younger age.

We can't even get most adults to do that.

I gotta agree with the MJ...

After going to a trucker bar this summer, it's painfully obvious.

I went in there, and there's things I never want to see again...ever...emotional scars...uhhh.....

The average IQ was somewhere around 4 and that was coincidentally the number of teeth all of them had combined.

And the food sucked.

I think it should be 18 to buy alcohol, but there shouldn't be a drinking age. That way, kids could learn about handling their liquor with their parents instead using a fake ID to sneak into a bar. Now, I do realize for a lot of people the appeal is breakin' the law, and lowering/dropping the drinking age wouldn't stop underage drinking, I just think the drinking age at 21 causes more problems than it solves.

Ah, drinking and purchasing ages. That's what we didn't get into. Of course, there's a difference. But I think that purchasing age should be the main concern.

It is because of the restrictions and drinking age limits that encourage underage drinking more so in the United States than anywhere else in the world. Most other countries have no minumum age for consuming alcohol. In most other countries, kids are allowed to consume wine or alcohol on special occasions and of course, a certain ammount only. Ever since I was 7 or so years old, I joined my cultural tradition of consuming a small ammount of alcohol every Chinese New Year.
