Yes, I agree, but every thing we need can be found in nature. There is no reason to be contaminating our bodies with synthetic chemicals. It is just too dangerous.

I certainly do not mean to judge or belittle those of you who suffer. And I do understand that sometimes things really are 'out of whack' so to speak. But not too long ago in our recent history women who had severe PMS were sent away to mental hospitals( actually treatable with a natural substance known as estrogen), and a common form of treatment was electric shock therapy. Now instead of locking us up in buildings, they're putting us in chemical cages, and instead of ELS we have chemotheropy and pills of every color. I just don't think we are focused on the right research.

I don't have anything inspiring to say, but I'd just like to raise my hand as another who's been saved by medication.

That's all.

Thank you, Prima (and others), for saving me from a rant. I'd suggest that some people need to read the fact sheets at this website. They might have their eyes opened. Then again, maybe not.

My depression started when I was 16/17, and lasted for 7 years. Quite frankly I wish I'd been on medication - I might have saved myself several years of uneccesary anguish.

Yes, and because it comes from nature it's safe as houses.
Go eat some foxgloves and see how you feel.

Everything we need can be found in nature? Everything? What, like latex gloves so we don't spread diseases? plastic - I can't even begin to list the uses for that. Are there probably some things out there that could help? probably. And when someone stops complaining about it and starts working harder on the problem, and we finally find something, THEN we will use it. And ditto Lady Lazarus's comment. I don't believe you have a thorough understanding of natural vs synthetic.

Seratonin is natural. Again, you show a distinct misunderstanding of what antidepressants actually do.

Quote:
pills of every color
Actually, most of mine are tan. That's the only problem I have with my drugs...why do they all have to look so boring?

Quote:
My mother put me in treatment after I got caught being drunk at school. They taught me that drug/alcohol use was not a problem, but a symptom. Of emotional nature. When some one is depressed and uses drugs to feel better, it does not take away the depression, but covers it up, leaving it to fester and when the 'mood altering' chemical wears off, the original feelings of depression, or anger, will become amplified. An example of this is some one known as a 'mean drunk'.
Alcohol is not the same as an antidepressant. That generall concept is right, but seeing as how we can't take the feelings of clinical depression away completely, drugs are the solution right now. And it appears to me that by the way they treated you, they did not consider you to be clinically depressed.

About the antidepressant-violence link:

Okay, yes. That's why adolescents on the drugs are supposed to be watched carefully for the first few weeks, and have therapy. In those cases, someone wasn't doing their job. Parents who should have cared for and watched for the child's symptoms, a psychotherapist...problems like this happen when someone doesn't do their job. When taking the medication, the risks are there. Whoever puts the child on the medication knows the risks, and accepts them. You have seven adolescents there who have had horrible side effects which have been ignored. There are more than seven people on these boards who have been helped miraculously by these same drugs. Can you imagine how many worldwide have seen their lives saved by antidepressants?

I think the answer to that one is relatively obvious - without those mood-altering drugs, there would be so many more suicides of the young - would you rather that ?

Why do antidepressants need warnings that they are linked to suicidal behavior in children and adolescents?

Federal authorities say that an extensive analysis of clinical trials shows that antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thinking or behavior in children, particularly in the early months of treatment of depression or other psychiatric illnesses.

At what cost? There are no long term studies on how these chemicals are effecting your liver or kidneys.

Everything made with patroleum including plastic, could be made with hemp oil. Milk cartons that are actually biodegradeable. hmmm, versus trashpiles of plastic that will be around forever. Wait, maybe you are on to something, I think I just figured out why God put us here.

GOD WANTED PLASTIC.
