At my employment on the New York State Thruway it is one of my job requirements to help people who are lost or in need directional assistance. Mrscarrdero and I have concluded that on any given day 58% (or more) of the patrons that we serve are either lost and or require directions even when there are signs clearly marking their required destinations.
Are we a society that doesn’t bother with signs anymore? Do we miss the important signs of our life? As a nation are we becoming focused or distracted on something else and becoming less aware of the more obvious signs needed to reach our desired destinations?

Its just a sign of information overload. It's not that we are not given info, it's that we are deluged by it. My son doesn't understand why I turn off the radio when I am looking for important signs. The less distraction the higher the probability that I will find my sign.

Maybe some people are so starved for actual people contact, that they look for excuses to interact. They want the human contact and not the signs.

Unfortunately this is exactly what has happened. This can been seen all throughout the Tanakh (the so-called "old testament") as well as the Gospel and the Qur'an. YHWH, God, Allah has been ignored for ages, may our hearts be open and our vision clear. And there comes not to them a communication of the communications of their Lord but they turn aside from it. Qur'an 36:46

I think it's just confirmation.
"Well the sign says this way, but I'm going to want some general directions just to reassure me I'm going the right way, and just in case it gets confusing later."

The worst thing is, here in England, the signs can often be messed around with (turned round to point the other way) - that desn't help. I agree netDoc, that I find I have to use my full concentration when driving, and try to ignore the 'Oohhh - look at that pretty gardens over there.' From Marie when I am trying to work out wwhich lane i ought to be in.
One of the worse things in the U.K is that because we have narrow roads in towns, most of them have to be turned into one direction only for traffic - sometimes it feels like I am trapped in a maize! ![]()
