The evolutionary history of kittens and cardboard boxes is a very recent, but good, example of co-evolution, even though it partially by non-genetic means. Just as bumblebees and the flowers they pollenate evolved together to their mutual advantage, so do cardboard boxes and kittens.
Many varieties of cardboard box have developed a relatively new strategy for survival and propagation: appearing on StuffOnMyCat.com. By showing themselves to be ideal for placing on cats, cardboard boxes encourage humans (with which the boxes have a complex relationship, controversially described as either symbiotic or parasitic) to acquire boxes with similar traits to the ones seen to be especially amusing when placed on cats. This encourages an increase in the "allele" frequency for those traits of cardboard boxes that make them especially suitable for this purpose. At the same time, many kittens have developed their own strategy for survival and propagation: KittenWar.com. While relatively recent in terms of the history of kitten life, this web site has produced extreme pressure on kittens to be as cute as possible. By utilizing cardboard boxes as props, kittens can enhance their natural cuteness, and hence receive an advantage in the competition. The consequence of this is that kittens who have traits that make them more suitable for being placed in, on or under cardboard boxes are being preferentially selected for, sometimes quite strongly. The result is a complex relationship between kittens, cardboard boxes and humans. Interestingly, in another example of evolutionary adaptation, some varieties of cardboard box have mutated and are beginning to form a similar relationship with puppies instead of kittens: Stuff On My Mutt: Max has been drinking again... |

I'd say that people and cardboard boxes are much more closely related.
Humans produce, use, discard and recycle I can't even imagine how many boxes a day. Humans love boxing up everything ... mass produced items, presents, god, ideas, reality, their own minds... even... little tiny kittens. Now let's not forget the labels.....
