Space Weather News for Dec. 15, 2006
http://spaceweather.com What do Arizona and Alaska have in common? Northern Lights appeared over both states on Dec. 14th when a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth, sparking a severe geomagnetic storm. The spectacular display is documented in a new photo gallery at http://spaceweather.com . Another coronal mass ejection (CME) is on the way and due to arrive on Dec. 16th. This CME is not heading directly for Earth, and so it will deliver only a glancing blow. Nevertheless, NOAA forecasters estimate a 50% chance of severe geomagnetic storms. Sky watchers should remain alert for more auroras.

This picture is breathtakingly beautiful to me. I wonder if it's natural and not photoshopped?

Sighs... Thanks so much for posting, Michel! I've been fascinated by the Northern Lights for months now. I can't get enough of these beautiful pics. I hope to be fortunate enough to see them someday.

We have been able to see them from here a few nights recently. While a lot of the color, etc is dimmed, it is still a wonderful thing to see. Even some of the students have been taking notice and talking about it at school!

I LOVE the Northern Lights! I want to see them so badly this year, but it's been cloudy and all of the light pollution from Bangor... *sigh.

Cool; thanks for posting michel.
I'll never forget seeing them in Colorado years ago. It's the undulating, shimmering and movement I found fascinating and mysterious. I can't imagine what people must have thought, before knowing it as a natural phenomenon.
