Default Holiday Traditions

Tell us what your winter holiday traditions are! Personal or family traditions. Are there movies you watch every holiday, or certain Christmas albums or songs you listen to? What kind of food is served? What are your religious traditions for the holiday? Do you decorate a certain way?

My family is Catholic so almost all of my traditions are for Christmas, though I have a few personal traditions for Yule.
One of my families fun, and weird holiday traditions is eating Chineese food on Christmas eve. I don't really know how that one got started, but as long as I can remember every Christmas eve we would get take out from ToFu, and then exchange gifts from my fathers side of the family at my grandmothers apartment (which was attached to our house).
We always have a bunch of signiture dishes for Christmas - garlic potatoes, glazed carrots, butter cookies and lemon merangue pie! Mmm mm! I make chocolates every year too, this year it's peanut butter chocolate dipped pretzels.
We also have a set of Christmas CD's we always listen to, and it just isn't Christmas for me without them. It's a set called "A Very Special Christmas", and it has 5 volumes.
We also spend an evening together to decorate the tree and the house, which is an involved process. Starting from taking 10 boxes down from the attic.

I participate in celebrations for Roman Catholic Christmas (Dec. 24/25) but not Orthodox Christian Christmas (Jan. 6/7). I have two Orthodox Christian friends, and we generally do something fun the night of the Jan. 7 but it's not an official, Orthodox Christian celebration - we just go clubbing, or rent movies, or something like that.

For Catholic Christmas I go to mass at sunset on Dec. 24. It's generally really crowded with non-Christians, who never go to the mass on the morning of Dec. 25. After that mass, we all hang out on the steps of the church and listen to music, chat, drink, eat, all of that. Older people go home, but the Katedrala faces a big empty square so everyone under 35 stays out for a big party.

Dec. 24 is also when Catholics here exchange gifts. It's nothing like in America, it's just little token things - often they're just jokes. (Giving hairbrushes to bald men, etc.). So we'll exchange some presents in the square and soon everyone goes back to their houses (probably around 10:30 p.m. or so).

Most Christians will leave their front lights on and you're free to go in and visit, have a coffee, all of that. Lines of people will be going from house to house visiting their friends, and friends of friends, and friends of friends friends, until late in the night.

Great topic!! I'm starting to feel the holiday spirit a little more each day this year.

My traditions are simple. Usually one night in the middle of december my girlfriend and I buy some chai teas and take a ride around the area to look at all the holiday lights.

On Christmas day, my dad's side of the family has a big pot luck. Everybody brings something. We exchange gifts but that's usually secondary . Its more about the fellowship than anything else.

On the day after, we get together with my mom's side. We do a secret santa. Everybody draws a name on the 4th of July and then buys a gift for whomever they drew. Unfortunately, my grandmother is in charge of it. One year she forgot to put me and my cousin Matt in the list of names and we ended up getting no gifts. They always say its better to give than to receive but sometimes you do at least want a little something.

As far as music and movies go, I don't really make a point of watching anything special. I don't usually play a lot of holiday music until the middle of the month. I hear enough of it at work, so that I don't want to hear it when I get home.

Must listen to Patrick Steward do Christmas Carol (very good rendition)
Buy a 12 foot tree and deal with that
Watch Grinch (the cartoon, my dad damns the Jim Carrey version)

Wake up about 8, make breakfast, grandparents come over and unload all their presents under our tree, open stockings and two gifts each at 9... then grandparents go home and we all shower, dress, eat lunch, start dinner, they come back over at 3 and open the rest then eat!

The only holiday traditions that I can remember are with my family. My husband and I are still rather newly married and have never had a Christmas on our own yet.

Every Christmas Eve (my Father's birthday) we open up one of our Christmas presents to celebrate his birthday. I'm not sure how this got started.

On Christmas morning, or night, whenever we open presents, we always read the story of the Saviour's birth to set the tone for the day. Then we open up our stockings and then presents. I'm really excited for this year.

Three words, Mickey's Christmas Carol I've watched it since I was *ahem* knee high to a grasshopper. We usually have lasagna on our Christmas Eve dinner... mmmmm.... lasagna....

My mom plays Burt Kempfurts Christmas record while making Thanksgiving dinner every year, and I found myself wanting to listen to it this year, just because it didn't seem like Thanksgiving without it.

Other than that, we have a family get together and gift exchange on Christmas, and I hold my own private Yule celebration a few days before Christmas.
