Sekovice Polje, Bosnia and Herzegovina - An Orthodox Christian man in the Republika Srpska [Orthodox Christian region of Bosnia] is suing his Roman Catholic neighbor for refusing to honor an election bet.

Vujadin Markovic is taking his neighbor, Sinisa Tripkovic, to court after Tripkovic bet his house and $15,000 Euros ($19,000 US) that the Serbian Democratic Party would win the Oct. 1 elections in the Republika Srpska. Markovic bet that, after 15 years in power, the Serbian Democratic Party would lose to the Social Democrats and he was right.

After the election results were announced, Markovic offered to allow Tripkovic to keep his home but insisted his neighbor pay the $15,000 Euros. Tripkovic refused, saying the bet was a joke, and offered to take Markovic out for lunch. Markovic refused.

"I ask that he pays me the 15,000 Euros while I'll allow him to keep his house, which he also put up in the bet," Markovic said.

"He has a beautiful young daughter that my son wishes to marry, and two younger sons. For the sake of his children I will allow him to keep his house. But he must honor our bet."

The legal bet was made before five witnesses and a contract was signed at the municipal office in Sekovici, satisfying all legal obligations for such bets in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Judge Mirnesa Sekovic, a Muslim who was born and raised in Sekovici but now lives in Sarajevo, will hear the case. Both parties have agreed to not bring the dispute before a jury and Sekovic's ruling will be final, without avenue for appeal.

WOW! I'm glad I don't really ever bet. You can't do something like that to your friend. Honestly, who takes a bet of more than 1 dollar seriously anyways?

My mom used to bet my older brother but he was always right. I think at one point she owed him about 50 dollars. She stopped betting eventually too.
