Dog saves owner from fire, dies trying to rescue cat

var clickExpire = "11/17/2006"; ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin (AP) -- After a disabled woman's cat started a house fire, her specially trained dog came to the rescue, then died trying unsuccessfully to rescue the cat.
Jamie Hanson said her 13-year-old dog Jesse brought her artificial leg and a phone she used to call 911.

"She got me outside and then she heard the cat upstairs and she went up there to get the cat, and she wouldn't come back to me," Hanson, 49, said at a news conference Monday at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, where she was being treated for her injuries.

She received third-degree arm burns in the fire Sunday night at her home in Rhine, south of Elkhart Lake. Both pets died.
Hanson, who lost a leg in a car accident three years ago, said she was on the couch watching television when the cat ran over the back of the couch.

"And he jumped onto a table that had a candle on it and tipped it over and lighted the artificial plants on fire," she said.
Hanson said she fell off the couch and was unable to get her artificial leg from the table, "so my dog got my leg for me and went and got the phone and brought the phone to me so I could call 911."

I feel sorry for the dog he sacrificed himself for nothing.

As an owner of 4 cats, with a friend who has 7, I understand how important it can be to "cat proof" the house.

Lord knows what they're up to while I'm asleep at night, other than chasing bugs.

Hi Booko! That story is making me feel to cry.

The cat can't be blamed. It was a dumb animal that didn't know better. Similarly, if a brave firefighter tried unsucessfully to rescue a child who didn't know better and was playing with matches, it wouldn't be anyone's fault. Accidents happen. I feel so sad for them though.

Yeah, cats are like kids. They play and run around and knock things over. I had to get up out of bed last night because I heard things crash to the floor. I had washed my breast pump and baby bottle and had left all the peices laid out on a towel to air dry. Needless to say...they all need rewashed now

That cat needs to be spun-dry in a washing machine. The dog is genius though...

I don't want to sound cold hearted, but the story is written in a way to make it sound like it did some extraordinary feat when "saving" the woman. The reality is it was doing what it had been trained to do.

I don't want to take anything away from the dog, but it wasn't some miracle.

Jeeze! Hang the cat from a tree for being a cat? There's a ton of compassion for you. I was touched by the story, but if anything, I would question why a woman with a cat would leave a lit candle in a place where it could easily be knocked over. On the other hand, I'm sure she didn't stop to consider the risk she was taking and must be absolutely devastated over the loss of her two pets.

If given the choice, I'd save the life of a cat any day over the life of a person stupid enough to blame a cat for knocking over a candle.
