One of the things that I have found, in my life so far, is the sad loss of good old fashioned 'chivalry'.
The liberated women of the sixties seemed bent on being seen as 'Equals' - with which I have no truck - perhaps I missed the 'Young innocent girl' look - the 'daintiness' - but I guess I am an old Romantic at heart. I still enjoy opening doors for women, carrying for them......all the 'Joys' of being a gentleman - the definition of whom is "a man who can make a woman feel like a lady". Am I alone in this ? As a man ? Do the women on the forum like a bit of Chivalry? Or am I a dinosaur?

It is good, Michael, to be chivalrous..DID I SPELL THAT RIGHT, LOL, but, not too much. When you do it too much, you are looked on by the opposite sex as weak, and needy. At least that is how I see the girls and women around me acting. Perhaps that is just in my little circle. Anywa, even I, am up for opening a door or greeting a woman with a smile and a 'how are you.' But, yea...

As a woman, I certainly hope that chivalry never goes away! I appreciate it when a man opens a door for me or offers to help me carry something or offers his seat on a bus. I see chivalry as kindness and respect, having nothing to do with equality, and certainly not as a man being "weak or needy."
(No, Michel, you are not a dinosaur!!!) ![]()

I was brought up to practice chivalry to people regardless of gender. The only people who seem to have a problem with me acting as such are some girls who feel like I am undermining them somehow. Guys rarely seem to have a problem with me holding a door open for them or sharing a load. It all seems a bit weird to me.

Chivalry = Courteous
I'm just as likely to hold a door, or help with packages, for a man as he is for me. Do I turn one down who's being chivalrous strictly because I'm a woman (meaning if I'd been a man, it wouldn't have happened)? Nope....I just politely thank them. Chivalry is never having to change your own flat tire and thank heavens for that since I never had the muscle to get the blasted lug nuts off! ![]()

I try to extend chivalry to everybody, and I am certainly not offended if anybody offers me help. I'm a little to proud to ask for it, or to show that I need it, so it usually comes as a great help when a man comes by and offers to help me...well, with whatever. I know that maybe a man is (usually) trying to treat me as an equal and not offend me if he doesn't help me, but I find it rather offensive if a man doesn't have the courtesy to hold a door for me, or whatever.

I would very much prefer a man being chivalrous to me rather than not being chivalrous because he thinks he might offend me. But as a rule, everyone should practice courtesy towards their neighbors.

Chivalry is not dead... I practice it unless asked not to, and then I do the chivalrous thing and beat them to a pulp.
Er, I mean, I treat a person as they want to be treated. ![]()

I will echo the others in saying that I always practice chivalry. On a date, I always pay for things, I open car and resaraunt doors, I will even stand there and hold the door for a long line of strangers before I go in. Sometimes someone will offer to hold it for me and let me in. Sometimes I let them, sometimes I don't. Depends on how chivalrous I'm feeling that day...
