I was watching Paragraph 175, a documentary on the persecution of homosexuals during the Nazi regime in Germany, and was particularly struck by the story one man told.
The guy they've been interviewing was with another guy (Manfred), and Manfred got arrested. The guy [I never did catch his name, dangit] went to Manfred's boss, "Manfred's entire family has been arrested and they're being held in my old school!" The boss, a huge, muscular German man, asks, "Do you have courage?" "Yes, I have courage," he replies. "My son is your size and has a Hitler's Youth uniform. Go and get Manfred out." So he goes in, does the whole heil Hitler business to fool the guards, and gets Manfred out of the cell and to the door. The guard asks if he'll bring him back. "Of course I will, he's a Jew!" He replies. Once they get outside he gives Manfred some money, tells him to go to his uncle's, and he'll meet him there later. Manfred says he can't leave his family, that he has to go back inside because his entire family's sick and he's the only strong one to take care of them, and walks back in without another word. There were so many stories on that documentary that should have entire books written after them. I highly recommend you guys watch it, if you ever get the chance. It alternates between a bit of light humor and things that made me tear up to hear of. |
