kind of un-nerved. like something had happened in the town in the recent past, and the tree is somehow a remaining sign of that. if the tree looked less like ashes, it might give me a cheerier feeling.

Other than the tree with it's very sharp edges, I'd say it's a rather well done piece. I don't see the couple kissing at all. I see the area you're talking about but can just make out a head and a beret.
The one aspect I find most odd is that the tree is white. The rest of the scene is more true to real life colors. ![]() |

To me, the tree looks happy, but out of place. It seems strangely natural looking, whereas the background is slightly more 'chuncky'- blockish in appearance. The colors bring me a sense of cheerfulness, though.

Looks like someone on the other side of the kissing couple does not like the idea of them kissing.
I suspect an angry father getting ready to club the young man romancing his daughter.
