The Cave at Chauvet-Pont-D'Arc contains paintings dating back more than 30,000 years making the cave the oldest known assemblage of cave art from the European Upper Paleolithic.
Some of the photographs from this French Government Site are better than the average photographs available of paleolithic cave art. Cave Map: http://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/arcnat/chauvet/en/

Hey there Sunstone, of course I have come across these pictures, but which species were they. It's a little late for H. sapiens neanderthalensis, Cro-Magnon seems to be in my mind for some reason, or were they AMH?
(I could google, but why when we can have a chat about it )

...and actually, tho' they are what one might call naive, they are no less beautiful. Seems some things are indeed beyond age.
