Veggies may keep breast cancer from returning Carotene linked to lower odds of facing the disease again, research finds Jaron Berman / AP fileCarotenoids, a group of nutrients found mostly in orange, deep yellow, dark green and red fruits and vegetables, are antioxidants which can block or repair damaged cells. By Karen Collins, R.D. MSNBC Updated: 12:04 p.m. ET April 14, 2006 getCSS("3027626") ![]() After breast cancer treatment, women who eat more vegetables and fruits have a better chance of preventing the disease from returning. That’s the bottom line conclusion from a study linking blood levels of a group of nutrients known as carotenoids with lower odds of facing the disease again. Past studies have shown inconsistent results about which nutrients might be protective. Now, researchers say, the total amount and variety of fruits and vegetables may be the key to prevention. Researchers for this new study followed more than 1,500 women, beginning on average two years after the women finished treatment for early-stage breast cancer. Initial tests confirmed that women with higher levels of carotenoids in their blood, which are markers of carotenoids in the diet, ate more vegetables and fruits.

That's good news if true, but my mother is practically a rabbit with all the fresh veggies she routinely consumes, and that did not prevent her from getting breast cancer the first time.
But, I do think that a good diet with lots of whole grains and vegetables is an important part of maintianing good health. Moderation in all things...cheers, lunamoth

I can imagine that a good diet is essential to good health to begin with for ALL illnesses...but eating proper still does not take away the predisposed genes we are born with that no matter what we do will lead to the result of inherited illness and disease...The main key in riding ourselves of these genes is figuring out how to stop the progression of predisposition in human life...this will be a major task for the scientists to accomplish but from my understanding they are getting a better handle on how to deal with the predisposed genes and it may all come too late for some of us but perhaps one day we will better understand what causes these predestined things from our heritage to happen and then these diets will help all the more. Would be a momentous time do you not agree?
