I only WISH I still had the Barbies I had...never knew how much they'd be worth. They were in good shape too cuz my brother and I played with Matchbox cars and those cheap Cowboys and Indians and army stuff that were popular back then with all the westerns on tv and gotta tell you we never tore up our toys or mutalated anything like some of you...that just seemed wrong to do...Anyway I had Barbie's the first one and the 5 that followed...plus Ken and Cricket and the cute little wardrobe for them and all that stuff...I can't believe British researchers don't have something better to do...like find out why no one can cure cancer...British dollars being wasted like the U.S. dollars get wasted on stupid stuff. Seems to me those little girls had some inner anger they needed to let out.

I have two memories of Barbie.....
At 5 I remember with horror the sight of undressing my beloved Barbie doll only to find two huge, gaping holes where her breasts used to be.....my brother's shenanigans of course. And.... I remember having Barbie and Ken 'DO IT' in the camping/tent set I had when I was nine. This was shortly after my babysitter (who was 15) told me where babies came from....I had to experiment! Hee ! My sister and I weren’t allowed to physically abuse our toys when we were young. Our parents actually scolded us for breaking our toys arguing that “Santa” paid good money for those toys so I was constantly challenged to use my imagination while preserving the fragility of the toy. Since our parents did not say anything about emotional abuse, I quickly figured out a way to torture our toys while still having fun. One night when my sister was sleeping with her Barbie I would carefully remove the doll and introduce her to the Micronauts, after a night of intense probing and torturous mental and medical tests, Barbie was placed back into my sister’s sleeping arms with one exception; the inclusion of newborn baby doll. The expression on my sister’s and Barbie’s face upon awakening the next morning was priceless and in the absence of a Ken doll my sister and her Barbie to this day still believe it was some kind of divine intervention.

Why is this shocking? Little boys melt and otherwise disfigure and destroy army figurines. I think there is a childhood fascination with destruction. I also think there is a link between creativity and nonstandard play. My sister was incredibly destructive with her Barbies, my my little ponies and other toys, and she is the most talented artist, musician, singer, songwriter... I've ever met. I don't think it has much to do with battling the unrealistic ideal... unless you want to explain how stuffed animals, my little ponies and other toys that aren't human at all exhibit a similar ideal. Of course, my sister NEVER idolized Barbie and she rarely played with her, but for some silly reason adults love to give little girls Barbies even if they would prefer to climb trees and play soccer with the boys.

I used to interchange my Barbie and Ken's head on each other's bodies. I do not this of this as torture, but a sign of other things.....
