Just wondering, has any of your family ever told you you were evil or going to hell for believing in a certain belief, or reading a certain book or acting a certain way?
How did you deal with it? What was your faith/belief/etc. that made them flip out? |

Both sides of my family have been LDS for generations, so I've never come across that feeling.

This is what I wrote about my grandmother in another post: Nah, I understand. She belongs to the Church of the Nazerene and everything is evil to her. In fact, my getting married in the temple(I'm LDS) was evil, me getting married at age 19 was evil, me marrying an LDS boy was evil(she even told me that she prayed every night that I'd marry a good 'Christian boy), me going to a LDS school was evil. I love her, but she can go overboard.

Not really that I'm going to hell, no. But I've heard about how stupid I was. Not overtly, just things like, "Oh, we believe in the Bible, not some fake Bible or other novels." Or, "I can't believe you converted. I thought you had more sense." Stuff like that from family and friends. Not too much, though, but it's still painful. I just internalise it. That's pretty much how I deal with everything. Internalisation.

I think I've actually given up on trying to change it. My mother had the same thing to deal with also.

I'm sure if my grandmother knew some of my beliefs she'd disapprove of them, so I don't talk to her about them. When she brings things up that I know she won't like my answer to, I dance around the issue and then change the subject.
