Far from a 'theory in crisis' or any of that... Evolution is a thriving field, intimately bound to all aspects of Biology (including medicine).
In order to highlight this, I thought I'd give a quick run-down on some of the science news of the past week or so. Evolution of Ant castes... Darwin Was Right About How Evolution Can Affect Whole Group Human ancestors born with big brains. Pelvis Dated To 1.2 Million Years Ago Shows Ancestors May Have Been Born With Big Heads How distinct genders evolved from hermaphroditic ancestors. Two From One: Evolution Of Genders From Hermaphroditic Ancestors Mapped Out More on eye evolution. Simple Eyes Of Only Two Cells Guide Marine Zooplankton To The Light yeast helps us understand evolution of social behavior. What The Social Lives Of Brewer’s Yeast Say About Evolution This just scratches the surface. If you took time (more than I have at the moment) you could get a list that dwarfs this one, all about evolutionary discoveries made just this week. But I also don't want to totally spam this place, just make a quick point. Enjoy. wa:do

Excellent thread, Wolf! I hope you keep adding to it.
(Of course, the real reason I hope you keep adding to it is because doing so will keep you off the streets and out of the gangs. Something I always worry about with you.)

new this week in Evolution...
My favorite story... A new fossil turtle sheds light on the evolution of this group. It still has teeth, which no living turtle has and... this is the best part... it only had half a shell. The bottom or Plastron. So what use is half a shell? How Did Turtles Get Their Shells? Oldest Known Turtle Fossil, 220 Million Years Old, Give Clues More on sexual selection and how/why it evolved. Flexibility Trumps Fitness In Sexual Reproduction, Says New Theory In Evolutionary Biology I'll see if I can find more later... but here is your weekly update for now. ![]() wa:do

ok, so the week isn't over yet, but I thought I'd give this a little bump with some new news.
Evolution of the Beaked whales odd teeth. Beaked Whales’ Tusks Evolved Through Sexual Selection Process Orangutans provide evidence for how speech evolves. Orangutan's Spontaneous Whistling Opens New Chapter In Study Of Evolution Of Speech More on the 'hobbit'. 'Hobbit' Fossils Represent A New Species, Concludes Anthropologist More information on LUCA... the Last Universal Common Ancestor Earth's Original Ancestor Was LUCA, Not Adam Nor Eve Evolution and its role in medicine Evolutionary Roots Of Ancient Bacteria May Open New Line Of Attack On Cystic Fibrosis More on the evolution of sexual reproduction Flexibility Trumps Fitness In Sexual Reproduction, Says New Theory In Evolutionary Biology enjoy. wa:do

If you want an idea on how much research is generated by evolution a good place to go is to take a stroll down pubmed
evolution - PubMed Results At the time that I post this there are 234788 articles on evolution, and another 20 or so made every day. For a "theory in crisis" those wacky scientists sure put up a good show. ![]() Last edited by rockondon; 01-26-2009 at 09:49 PM.. |
