My uninformed guess is that our ancestors probably used tools before they developed speech (hence before singing and storytelling). All the others would normally involve the use of some kind of tools.

It was story-telling.
The human desire to communicate significant life experiences from one to another is what first revealed the phenomena of art to us. Art happens when a human being expresses his/her "soul" to others through some physical medium. And that first occurred when human beings first tried to communicate essential information to each other. As they tried to communicate that information to each other, through words and gestures and sounds and perhaps even drawings in the dirt, they discovered that they were also revealing aspects of themselves along with the information, to others. And the others soon came to value this exposition of the soul of the story-teller even more than the actual story being told. And thus, art was born.
