I don't know about "random", but I would say that the most telling evidence of new species forming is that we've directly observed it (Ferrow Island mice, American Goatsbeard, etc).

Female... the ability to reproduce would have had to have been present in creature that founded modern life.

Lungs evolved very early in the evolution of the fish. And duringthe Devonian time period, and in only a couple of, at least,originally fairly unimportant groups of fish, those lungs persistas respiratory organs, as a means of taking in oxygen.

In one of those groups of fish, lungs stopped being used forrespiration and started being used as a hydrostatic organ. "Hydro" meaning water. Hydrostatic organ. And it'sa device that allows the animal to adjust the density of its bodyso that it has the same density as the water surrounding it.
That marvelous hydrostatic organ, which is called a SwimBladder, evolved from the lungs of these early Devonian fish.When we look at fossils or paleontologists look at fossils, theycan identify five different groups of Devonian fish that all havelungs.

actually male and female likely happined at the same time. Hermaphrodites and asexual reproduction came before sexual reproduction.

Lungs are also the likely precursor to the swim bladder in some fish (the telosts), they are used to suppliment oxygen in poorly airated waters(in modern lunged fish). Another good reason to have a lung is that it is a way for an active fish to provide more oxygen to thier hearts. Gills are only so efficent at high speed due to the way they send blood to the heart. The fish heart gets oxygenated blood last when using gills only, the oxygen goes directly to the body first. (not good for prolonged athletics)
perhaps the more intresting question is why did fish loose thier lungs?

Intrestingly the ear seems to have evolved origionally to keep bottom dwelling lunged fish/amphibians from getting muck in thier gills.
