Evolution, concise evidence (Darwin, pray, God, religion)

Hi all,
I personally believe that there is a lot of clear evidence for evolution. Proving that it happened a million years ago is difficult, but we can clearly see that it is going on now, as Darwin showed with the turtles on the Galapagos isles, and as the evolving colour of moths through the Industrial Revolution demonstrated.
My point is that if you extrapolate this evidence, combined with fossil evidence, you have a pretty clear argument. Yes, the world could have been made only a few thousand years ago, and the fossils put there to confuse us, but come on, get real.

Hi Net Doc, I am glad we agree. But it still seems there are people who hang on to the view that evolution is some conspiracy, so I was summing up the evidence as concisely as I could. Thankyou for your reply,

The real issue for me are the extremists. There are those who would pit evolution against God on either end of the spectrum. Then there is the large group in the middle who have no issues accepting theism and evolution as being non exclusive to each other.

I couldn't agree more. Evolution merely explains the development of species, and is totally compatible with a belief in God or religion. Of course, those who believe the world was created a few thousand years ago have the fossils to explain (why would God trick us?), but still, this is no reason to feel attacked by what is after all, just a theory.

I forgot this in my last post.....i beleive that evolution is going on....but on a very small scale. The peppermoth thing in europe is true proof of the natural selection theory. But that is in terms of the color of their wings.....the moths didn't change into seamonsters to avoid their predators now did they

Joe, I agree the moths only demonstrate evolution on a small scale. However, remember evolution into sea monsters took millions of years. Short term relies on a set of key genes, which allow simple changes such as size and colour to change over much shorter periods of time, and this is what we can measure.
Also, I agree that the theory of evolution leaves gaps - how did we get to bacteria in the first place, before they could evolve? Did they just appear? Or did God play a part?
