Mr. Spinkles -
I didn't say that the Big Bang, or some version thereof didn't necessarily happen. One of the current prevalent theories postulates a cyclical Big Bang/Big Crunch.....endlessly repeating itself. This helps deal with the "What happened before the Big Bang" question. I know that integrating dark matter and some of the other recent discoveries into the overall picture causes the original singular Big Bang concept to need some tweaking. Beyond that, I'm a scifi fan not a physicist, so I get out of my depth pretty quickly.

Ok..so I`m not gonna get it for awhile if at all.
I guess i can live with that. Another question... I just read in the news the other day that one gallaxy collided with another. How did this happen if the universe is expanding? |

linwood-- Galaxies collide for the same reasons that gas clouds condense and the same reasons asteroids collide with the Earth--gravity. Gravity is what causes gas clouds to condense into stars and planets, it's what causes these same clouds and stars and planets to condense and form galaxies, and it causes galaxies to come together into clusters of galaxies, which sometimes collide with each other. Keep in mind the average seperation between galaxies is a mere 20 times their diameter.
Engyo-- According to my astronomy and space physics textbook (man this thing comes in handy!) the "oscillating universe theory" (that the universe expands and contracts, then expands again) is no longer taken seriously. This is because "theoretical work...suggests that successive bounces of an oscillating universe would be smaller until the oscillation ran down" (Astronomy, Michael A. Seeds). Also, observations from the Hubble indicate that the rate of expansion of the universe is accelerating, so we can throw contraction out the door. Also, you are right about the "singular Big Bang" concept needing some tweaking...my book strongly emphasizes that the Big Bang did not happen at a single point (as there is no "center" in an infinite universe) but it happened everywhere. Talk about the ultimate brain teaser!

I mean If the universe is expanding (everything moving away from everything else) I figured if they hadn`t already been subjected to gravitational pull between them they`d just be even farther away so even less pull but...oh hell. I`ll go read some more. <sigh> |

I have a question, can we see the "edge" of the universe?

Thats another one I can`t grasp. If the universe is space and all matter within it then when you get to the edge of the universe what have you got? More space..therefore more universe. Hawkings says the universe and space/time could be spherical but if it is spherical then that spherical universe is sitting right in the middle of ..what? More space...and again more universe. It`s like the chicken and egg question. |

I tend to believe the universe and time are simply infinite both ways.
I understand that time has no relevance before matter and is a man made concept but that doesn`t mean that it simply can stop. The concept has to be there even without the existance of matter. If a tree falls in the forest and no one`s there to hear it does it make a sound? Of course it does. |

These things can make you have an anurism thinking about them.
Because if the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into? If it is spherical, where is the center? Quote:

I understand that but by that logic if we took our concept of time to another planet in another solar system it would no longer exist either. But in reality it would still exist it would just be measured against different material forces. If there were no material forces with which to measure it the concept itself would still exist . Time..in concept ..still passes even if there`s no one to measure it. |
