![]() Seyed Mehdi Kazemi, 19, is an Iranian citizen in Europe who is under a double death threat if he returns to Iran. He is gay, and he is an apostate from Islam. He went to Britain in 2005 on a student visa. While he was studying in Britain, in April 2006, his boyfriend back in Iran was hanged for homosexuality. Kazemi learned from his uncle that before the boyfriend was executed, he named Kazemi as someone with whom he had had a sexual relationship. Kazemi, fearing for his life if he returned to Iran, applied for asylum in the U.K. His application was rejected, and he fled to the Netherlands, which -- unlike Britain -- has a policy of not returning homosexuals to Iran. He also converted to Christianity. Today, the Council of State of the Netherlands (according some reports, and the Hoge Raad -- Supreme Court -- according to others) denied Kazemi's plea for asylum. The court found that under the Dublin Regulation, the EU country an applicant first enters must rule on the application. The Netherlands will not return Kazemi to Iran, but says it will return him to the U.K. within 72 hours. Once in the U.K., he faces deportation to Iran and almost certain death as both a homosexual and an apostate. His only hope now if that someone at the top levels of the British government will intervene to save his life. Waheed Alli, Baron Alli, one of only two openly gay members of the House of Lords, demanded today that the government take action to prevent Kazemi's deportation. It remains to be seen whether it will. Why is this in "political debates"? What's to debate? Iran is an outrage to modernity and humanity.

The Home Secretary has granted Kazemi a temporary reprieve while she considers his case.
Ms Smith said: "Following representations made on behalf of Mehdi Kazemi, and in the light of new circumstances since the original decision was made, I have decided that Mr Kazemi's case should be reconsidered on his return to the UK from the Netherlands."Full story here: BBC NEWS | Europe | Gay Iranian deportation reviewed

TBH I don't think he will get deported.
He has some support here at present. I hope he gets to stay.

I'm not too big on asylum, but if anybody deserves it, it's this guy!

Some comments -- From The Independent: But his attention has now turned to his transfer to Britain. "If I am allowed to stay in this country I want to continue with my English studies. I like it in England, I felt safe and much freer. If I go back to Iran it will be most certainly death for me." |
