On the BBC website today there is a report of demands being issued by the alleged kidnappers of Alan Johnston. He has now been held hostage (it is thought) since March 12th.
The group, Jaish al-Islam, are demanding the release of Muslim prisoners in UK prisons and specifically a Palestinian cleric by the name of Abu Qatada whom the BBC claims is connected to Al-Qaeda. Should the UK government enter into negotiations? What implications are there for the peace process in the occupied territories as a result of this kidnapping and prolonged captivity?

Why is it that military personnel, employed to go into dangerous places, being held captive by a foreign state are given so much attention, and a reporter in the hands of lunatics in Palestine is quietly ignored?

If the goverment gets involved in negotiations, it should do so in a manner that it can claim it was never involved in negotiating with the kiddnappers.
