Contract killings of reporters in Russia are distressingly common. However, in the past, most such killings have involved reporters investigating organised crime or dodgy business dealings,so their killers were most likely criminal elements.
In Ms. Politkovkaya's case, it's hard to imagine who might want her dead other than the Kremlin itself.
