Whore of Babylon (Jesus, ritual, Earth, crucified, Kingdom)

Why do many anti-catholics believe that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon of Revelation 17 and 18?

Being an 'protestant' I really don't understand that either. Perhaps they believe that because the catholic church became the official religious group of the Roman Empire after it (the Romans) crucified Jesus. Perhaps other reasons to, but from my study of the bible and that of other people who study those things (LaHey and Jenkins included) I percieve this 'woman' to be, perhaps, free babylonians who kill christians, or other inhabitants of that city. The Catholic Church has never (to my knowledge) declared itself a ruling party over the world. Under the power of the hand of God, it was moved into a position with power, but in NEVER had absolute power.

I would like to see people stop debating this, as it is quite obvious that that lady is not the catholic church if you have ever bothered to read the text with an open mind.

And I heard another voice out of heaven say: "Get out of her, my people, if YOU do not want to share with her in her sins, and if YOU do not want to receive part of her plagues. For her sins have massed together clear up to heaven, and God has called her acts of injustice to mind. revelation 18;4 ....seems that God does not want his people to be any part of this woman ,why? she is going to go down in a big way ,because she is spiritually dirty and God does not want his people to be spiritually unclean ,that is why he wants to separate his people into a clean spiritual condition it is my belief that this woman is the .....world empire of false religion ............and those who claim to represent the God of the bible , but instead have become unfaithful to God, are the most guilty in Gods eyes. Jehovah God himself will destroy this woman .

We read in the book of Revelation that John saw a woman, a harlot named Babylon the Great, riding a scarlet-colored beast. He writes: "And he says to me: ‘The waters that you saw, where the harlot is sitting, mean peoples and crowds and nations and tongues. And the ten horns that you saw, and the wild beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her devastated and naked, and will eat up her fleshy parts and will completely burn her with fire. For God put it into their hearts to carry out his thought, even to carry out their one thought by giving their kingdom to the wild beast, until the words of God will have been accomplished. And the woman whom you saw means the great city that has a kingdom over the kings of the earth.’"—Rev. 17:15-18..........so the question is, are we any part of the harlot ? only we ourselves can answer that one.

Can you post some sources to support this statement? I am not argueing for or against but a footnote or two could help this thread out.

I personally feel that the view of the Catholic Church as the whore of babylon is simply based upon bigotry and ignorance.
