You know, having had mods and looking unlike the "norm", I've got to put my two cents in here.

We hear the words "freak" and "weirdo" all the time (I hear them at least three times a week), and for the most part, it doesn't really bother most of us. You know WHY those words don't bother us though? It's because we hear them so often, we're completely desensitized to them. That doesn't mean that the feelings behind the words don't sting us. It's not the words themselves that bother us, but believe me, we KNOW where they come from. We know that for the most part, the feelings behind the words of those of fear and disgust and (though maybe you guys aren't necessarily like this), the thought that because we look the way we do, that we are lower than you ("you" as in the collective, general "you", not in a pointed way.)

We may look different, but that doesn't make us bad or mean or inferior. It just means we express ourselves in different ways. You may paint, or draw, or write to express your feelings, we tattoo ourselves and pierce ourselves and do all sorts of other body mods. You take great pride in your artistic impressions and we take great pride in ourselves and OUR artistic expressions. Our bodies are our canvases.

I do understand the "fear" (for lack of a better word) that people feel when they see someone like me, or like Erik (AKA "Lizardman"), but you have to understand, really, we're nothing to be afraid of. Most people who've had mods done, whether it be tattoos, piercings, tongue-splitting (which I almost did last summer), ball bearings implanted somewhere (I had "horns" surgically implanted on my skull for a few years, but I took them out), or stretched piercings, or anything else, are more than happy to discuss them because they understand that most people don't understand it.

Just, please, the next time you see someone who's had mods done, don't point or stare or whisper or immediately jump to the "freak" conclusion. Go up to them and talk to them. Ask them about the mods. They'll most likely be MORE than happy to explain themselves.

We may look different, but other than our appearances, we're still people and we deserve to be treated as such. Just think about that the next time you feel the urge to call someone a freak.

We fear what we don't understand. So take the time to understand them and get to know the person underneath the mods. You may be surprised at what you learn.

He is! Erik and Megan are AWESOME people. They're so friggen cute together. I met them and a few others from the New York Sideshow a few years back when I was touring with... I think it may have been the Bloodhound Gang.

Insectavora was my favorite. Got to sit and have a few drinks with her and listen to her explain her fire eating act. It was amazing.

Anyway, yeah, of course they admittedly look a little weird (I italicized "look" because they themselves AREN'T weird, though their appearances are), but wow, they were some of the coolest people I'd ever met.
