I'm worried about some my friends....
Some have given so much to defeating the Marshall/Newman amendment - money, time, and energy. Last night I was talking with several members of my congregation, gay and straight and all of whom are involved in this fight in one way or another. It's getting close to the election now and while we remain hopeful and keep moving forward, there also came the realization that we may lose; that hate and discrimination will be written into our state's Bill of Rights. As we talking about the possibility of this absurdity, several of our group became very emotional and distraught at the thought of that happening - and they were the straight ones. No matter what the outcome, this is just the beginning... we will continue fighting for full equality. But I'm worried for some of my friends if we suffer a setback of this magnitude. I'm not worried that they will give up, I know better than that. But I am worried they will lose their hope, spirit, and energy. They are my friends and I love them. I don't want to see them hurt. Good news: Everyday more and more political leaders, newspapers, faith organizations and religious leaders, medical and legal professionals, etc., are speaking out against the amendment, even those who originally supported it have changed their minds and have said they will vote no.

I hope it will be the first in a chain of events that will lead to a more free and equal place for every one to live.

I've already reconciled myself as best I can to the likelihood that Colorado will pass a ban on gay marriage this year. At the same time, I'm hoping the voters will also pass a referendum setting up domestic partnerships. Currently, it looks like both measures will pass.

I'm so nervous about the amendment in Wisconsin. I fear that it's going to pass because that's just been what's happened in every other state that's had one. The anti-gay activity on campus makes me worry more (mainly students tearing down or defacing with slurs the LGBT organization's posters - which, though, is nothing even remotely new). There's some comfort in the fact that if any of the states that currently have one of these amendments, Wisconsin is the most likely to defeat it, but I still don't have much hope. It's going to be so close. I can't stop worrying about it. If it passes, I will consider moving out of this state in the future (i.e. if I ever have enough money
). I refuse to live in a state that treats me as a threat to others by simply being me. |
