President Aníbal Cavaco Silva announced Monday night that he will sign the same-sex marriage bill, making Portugal the sixth country in Europe and the eighth in the world to allow same-sex marriage nationwide.
I don't have this from a Portuguese source yet, but the AP is reporting it. Portugal's president ratifies gay marriage law

Still waiting for the Portuguese. Edit: I got overly enthusiastic. That's just the AP report in Italian. Where's Reuters?

Okay, we now have it from two Portuguese sources:
Cavaco promulgou casamento gay com várias críticas ao Parlamento - JN Cavaco promulga diploma que permite casamento 'gay' - Portugal - DN Cavaco wasn't a very good sport. A longtime opponent of marriage equality, he took the opportunity to grouse about it and say that civil unions would have been better. But he's signing; that's the important thing.

Here's something you Texans may find interesting: The English version of the Houston Chronicle hasn't reported it yet, but the Spanish version has posted the AP story.

For those who don't know, 17 May is IDAHO - The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.
It's also the anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that struck down school segregation laws in the U.S. It's also the anniversary of the first legal same-sex marriages in the United States, which took place in Massachusetts on 17 May 2004. Good day for civil rights.
