Default Technology and the superpowers

Has the USA and other super powers become all too dependant on the latest technology and forgotten about the human factor?
In Vietnam, both France and Usa went in believing they were a modern highly advanced super power up against what they saw as a primative 3rd world army and came away with a bloodied nose. so in the words of John Fogerty is Iraq " Daja Vu all over again"?
I mean with all their smart Bombs, they are still getting knocked about by a fanatic enemy!

Personally, I think the reason the US has done so poorly in both is that we pull punches. We would have lost WWII if we ran it this way too. Douglas MacArthur said that once war had begun, there is no substitute for victory. Meaning, that defeating the enemy was the only legitimate goal. I agree, if we are going to fight a war, fight to win. We lose because we mess around with politics and media.

If we were truly bound to the latest technology, we would have dropped an atomic bomb on Vietnam. In a certain way, we showed a restraint that might have been difficult for other countries to keep under wraps.
