Tiny EU steps toward Hamas ruffles feathers in Jerusalem

Israel has to question the "judgment and moral clarity" of any country that has contacts with Hamas, a senior diplomatic official said Thursday following reports that the European Union was changing its policy regarding Hamas and would countenance low level meetings with Hamas officials.

"It should be remembered that Hamas does not accept Israel's right to exist, doesn't support peaceful arrangements with Israel, and therefore any contact with this organization places in doubt the judgment and moral clarity of those choosing this contact," the official said. But Dutch Ambassador Bob Hiensch, who in Israel also represents Luxembourg, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU, said that contrary to press reports, the EU had not altered its policy towards Hamas.
