Norman Porter was recaptured on Tuesday of this week. cnn reports:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/03/23/fug....ap/index.html Norman Porter jr is one of the most interesting killers/prisoners of our time. After reading the article I went into my library and found my book entiled, "Wanted for Murder" by Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth. I reread the section on Porter and here is a brief post on him. According to the book he was born Jan 28th 1940. He was an 8th grade drop out and started a life of crime. On Sept 29th he during an armed robbery killed a man named John Pigott, who was only 22 at the age he died. Porter executed him. The young pigott was in the process of getting the money the thieves demanded of him when Porter stuck the shotgun to his head and pulled the trigger. He was captured and given a life sentence for his crime. He would be eligable for parole in 15 years. The first year in he broke out of prision with another immate Edgar Cook. Cook committed suicide when police caught up with him and Porter was recaptured. During their escape they killed a prision guard by the name of David Robinson. Porter the only living witness to the murder says that Cook killed the guard and he was tried as an accompliance and given another life sentence. Plus he had old ones for armed robberies. I am not sure of his release date but I understand it would be a very long time. He stayed inside prision got his high school diploma and started a prision newspaper and prision radio station called radio free norfolk. Norfolk was the prision he was in at the time. He wrote poetry and tons of letters on the shortages he found on the system and asking for his release. He gained much popularity and his sentence for the murder of Robinson was commuted. He still had a while to go with three other charges. On Dec 23rd 1985 Porter was seen speaking on a payphone at 4:30 pm. After that he just disappeared after being in the prision since his second capture for 24 years. On tuesday he was caught some 20 years later. |

Was he making a long distance call and slipped through the phone wires? Interesting story. Did they ever find out how he escaped and if he killed anyone while out of jail?

He has been on the Mass. most wanted list since his escape being that he was an escape murderer. I read about him years ago and found the whole thing fascinating because he comes across as really intelligent but with a really dark side to his personaity that surfaces from time to time. As far as him killing anyone else at this point the answer is no but this all happend just days ago so it may take a few weeks for the story to come to light. The man is a talker though so I imagine real soon we will start getting details of his life. I found it interesting that he stayed in the United States as opposed to going to Canada Mexico or somewhere else over seas. |

Sometimes it's most effective to hide right out in the open.
