Can you guess what I was doing?

In my Avatar photo... I was doing something one normally wouldn't do when posing for a photograph. Can you guess what it was? I'll give you a hint - you probably wouldn't consider it out of character for me...

 I'll give you a hint, anyone from a culture where what I'm doing is common will probably recognize the position of my arm and hand, and guess correctly - or will certainly "see it" once told what I'm doing.
