Dubrovnik, formerly Ragusa, was one one of the most powerful city states in the world - comparable, in its day, to Venice. Today it is, without exception, the most popular tourist resort in the former Yugoslavia. Millions of people visit the city each year.

And in response to the color photographs of war hint, Dubrovnik was one of the first cities targetted by Serbian nationalists in their quest to conquer Croatia and cleanse it of non-Orthodox Christians (which composed more than 90% of the population).
It was bombed by the air force, the navy, and by ground troops for 11 months and suffered quite significantly. Dubrovnik, Sarajevo, and Vukovar (also in Croatia) are "Siege Sisters", we share cultural events and these sorts of things - and a hatred for Serbian nationalists. Dubrovnik, 1991:
