I cannot afford a car with more gas milage, and I sure am not going to ride 7 miles on a bike in the sun along the highway to work every day... So I'll just be spending half my paycheck on gas.

I'm trying to get a car with 32-35 MPG; at the moment I have to use a car just to get to work and school. It's killing my budget.

My Honda Civic gets 30Mpg and my job is only 6.5 miles away. Driving 13 miles a day uses 0.43 gallons of gas. At 4 dollars a gallon it costs around $1.73 a day. I'm pretty sure that's cheaper than riding the bus. I used to commute much farther and use 5 gallons a day at $3.00 a gallon. So , gas could go up to $7.00 a gallon and I'd still be no worse off financially than I was back when I commuted far.

I didn't drive a lot in the first place, but now I actually find myself skipping things or slightly resentful about things that require my driving. I cannot afford a hybrid. Besides, that's ultimately not the solution.

Visiting my daughter is the toughest. She lives 75 miles away which makes for a 150 mile round trip to pick her up and then another 150 miles to drop her off. At 30Mpg I use 10 gallons of gas, costing me 40 bucks. But even if the price doubled I'd still go see her.

When I put $20 worth in the tank and still have to worry about it being enough to get out of the gas station parking lot.

I'll be hitchhiking at $5.18 a gallon.

I just quit my job that was a 37-mile commute. My car is old, and has 117,000 miles. It still works fine (knock on wood) for now, but when I get a new one (read: when I can afford a new one), gas mileage will be probably the biggest deciding factor.
