I will say that being agnostic myself, I really don't hold a belief of any kind except open space with fill-in-the-gaps. I really don't define myself as someone who believes or posses some belief in god. Labels are labels and not every label is concrete. Sometimes I call myself an atheist, I just don't identify with the extreme view unless it involves the inhumane treatment of humans or resents proven logic.

I think you can only answere that question for yourself. Anyway it seems to me that you do posses some care or concern to come into a place like this and ask such a question...

BTW, I've met many atheists who are well learned in religions. So I think it takes some care to educate before assuming.

The approach to be *INCLUSIVE* meaning one should had *empathy* for the other's condition, which you not only have experienced but demonstrated here.

Personally that is how a normal rational being should go about it.
The Search begins, then, what next.
Just be open, go about your daily chores without any reactions but responding to the situation at hand by relating with it.
Understanding has to grow from within by observing, interacting, responding through empathy.
*god* is just a label which personally refer to as the *whole* just another label simply to *rationalize it*. Mind creates dualities of the ONE and so the Whole includes the duality as not two but one.. If we can see only *ENERGY* which is universal and individual. Everything is the same ENERGY.
Just this realization will bring about the necessary understanding that one looks for.

Over all beliefs are just dont care, i try to rationalize stuff with my wife and usually she gets all mad. Not being mean at all, just straight conversation.

i dunno if that's a category but with the 100's of different religions out there i could only assume that my type of thinking would be labeled something

Well im not a million miles away from your situation. But i would advise not to get too caught up in labels, as it doesnt seem to be inherently your thing or what might be important to you. I dont find they lead anywhere useful. at least for me.
Trick is not to get caught up by pressures around you to be something that your not, or adopt ideas that arnt yours. Would be a shame to realise down the line that ideas you thought were your own turned out not to be.
