Peter Berger came up with 4 existential questions that define the meaning of life:
Who am I? Why am I here? How should I live? What happens when I die? In this way religion is described as a set of beliefs that connect the individual to a community and in turn to a sense of being or purpose beyond the individual. Is Atheism a religion? How do you define a religion? Can we have a nomos in an Atheistic world? If not are we doomed to anomie? Do we need religion to create a meaningful social order? Can atheists have meaningful nomos and reliable morals or value systems? |

I try not to define a religion --that way I don't have to be wrong about it. "Nomos" isn't in my dictionary except as an Irish band. I suppose we can have a Nomos in the atheistc world if their music is acceptable. If not, I think it may be a sign that we are doomed to anomie: yes. I think we need only be to create a meaningful social order. Atheists do have meaningful morals and value systems, so I suppose it's possible.

Atheism is not a religion, but at certain time, certain people who are atheist can almost have a religious fervor to their beliefs (or non-beliefs to be more accurate). There are even a few here (I won't name names). There are even some atheists who proselytize (well, maybe not exactly proselytize, I don't want to turn this into a debate in a no debate area
) Let's just say a small amount of atheists try to spread their non- beliefs to believers.

Atheism isn't a religion, but some atheists sure do make it into one.
