The purpose of this thread is to ascertain the core beliefs of members.
I invite you to make a statement or summary of your core beliefs in one paragraph, perhaps followed by any comments you wish to make. Please try to be as brief, to-the-point and clear as possible. I will let someone else start off. I hope this thread will be a success in clearing up misunderstandings between us (members) and provide a little insight and clarity to enable more fruitful discussions and debates in future. ![]() |

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Good idea for a thread.
One paragraph could be hard though. I believe humanity is insignificant on the cosmic scale of things, and that our tiny squishy meat brains are incapable of comprehending even a fraction of the totality of existence. I believe the best we can do is attempt to understand our minuscule place in the universe and what it means to be human, and I believe this is best done through the Buddha's teachings. I also believe that topics such as God, fae, karma, etc are not to be dismissed as impossible, only as either unnecessary to understanding the human condition and so irrelevant, or as unobservable and so irrelevant.

"I" am a personality energy essence that is currently exploring the physical system through the form of a human animal. Though my main identity exists outside of both time and space my physical manifestation is immersed in those perceptions in order to learn as much as possible about said system. I am less concerned with unravelling so-called "truths" than I am interested in accumulating experience that enchances my core being through such endeavors. Suffice to say that "truth" is relative, while experience is forever.

Everything I believe is provisional. This caveat does not apply to experience.
I believe I can experience more complexity than I can rationalise. It (experience) is also instantaneous. I believe God is infinite, every time it occurs to me, I am awed by the wonder of my exisence. I believe others have different ideas and understandings to me, even those that appear to contradict mine do not contradict my concept of God in the face of infinity. I believe I experience God in the mundanity of a drizzling Wednesday afternoon. I believe God is everything. I believe that "I" am eternal, but the "I"that I refer to is not the conscious me, rather the awareness that lies behind my consciousness. I believe Christianity is the culturally appropriate path for me to seek my "truths" on. But I do not believe it is to be taken literally. I believe humanity is inherently good. I believe death is a human invention. I do not believe that we can not exist. Edit- I apologise that it's not a paragraph Thanks Random. This got me thinking!

I believe that we are all here for no reason at all. Somehow life started, and there is nothing at all special or purposeful about it. There is no god, no souls, no heaven, no hell, nothing... We are all shaped by the societies in which we live, which accounts for feelings of love towards certain people, such as family members whom we would hate if they were not related to us. We all have to be alive, and most people are trying to discover something to give their lives meaning, but I'm just living, and trying to enjoy it until I die and decay.

I was thinking that, seeing as how there are so many confidently asserted and diverse viewpoints from members here, virtually everyone would jump at the opportunity to express themselves clearly, and make a definitive statement on what it is they actually believe. But I understand that some who like too much to play the field (so to speak) might not be inclined to do that... In any case, I do hope this thread doesn't die. To the brave members who have already replied, thank you again. |

My beliefs change constantly. The things that seem to stay consistent are: Religion is all an attempt to explain the same thing, the mystery. All religions have found some truth, but not the whole truth. Mostly, people get into trouble when they take things out of context, or mistake the sign for the thing signified.
Our minds are completely dependent on our physical bodies, and die along with our bodies. That pretty much sums it up, I think, although, I'm sure if you ask me two months from now, the same question, I might have a different answer.
