Ecclesiastes 6:12- For who knoweth what [is] good for man in [this] life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

Before Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes he tried to discover what it was good for a person to do in this life, which would definitely be a good thing to know because we can’t go back in time and do things over. Whatever we spend are time doing today can’t be changed tomorrow. He realized that in the big picture life was really short and then there was death.
He decided to build things for himself, and buy thing for himself and was very rich, but then he realized that it was all vain, it wouldn’t stop the inevitable or bring him joy when he was gone, but someone else would have all the things he used too. In fact when he realized that it didn’t bring him joy even then.

Ecclesiastes 2:11- Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all [was] vanity and vexation of spirit, and [there was] no profit under the sun.

He realized all the work that people do to get what thy have has the potential negatively influence them on the inside.

Ecclesiastes 4:8- There is one [alone], and [there is] not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet [is there] no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither [saith he], For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This [is] also vanity, yea, it [is] a sore travail.

He realized in the long run that even seeking pleasure was vain and couldn’t not keep a person in a state of peace.

Ecclesiastes 2:1-2- I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also [is] vanity. I said of laughter, [It is] mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

He observed the state of mind people were spending their lives in-

Ecclesiastes 9:3- This [is] an evil among all [things] that are done under the sun, that [there is] one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness [is] in their heart while they live, and after that [they go] to the dead.

He saw also the cruelty and unfairness that was in the world-

Ecclesiastes 4:1- So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of [such as were] oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors [there was] power; but they had no comforter.

After observing and experiencing much of the joy and sorrow of this life he came to the conclusion that not even knowledge itself was without vanity, but to have a good conscience before God and to keep his commandments was ultimately the most important thing, and that God had appointed a time to judge every work and every purpose.

Ecclesiastes 12:12-14- And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books [there is] no end; and much study [is] a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether [it be] good, or whether [it be] evil.
