My personal opinion is why opress kids (I am talking 12 and up) with censorship when they are going to experience all of it anyway somewhere else.
If we can educate our kids on knowing what is right and wrong and what we hold as our morals why should we try to protect them from things the world puts out. Now of course I am taking out pornography from this topic but that is def. for adults only. I am talking about basic cable channels on TV. And if you do think we should censorship some things then what about stories in all religions of the world. Religion has killed millions of people over 1000s of years. Would you want your kid watching documentaries on that?

Psychologists would say that the children aren't emotionally ready to handle it.

My ideal nation not only doesn't censor, but the public school systems intentionally expose children to these things. Not just the facts of life such as anatomy and reproduction, but social issues such as drugs that are illegal in many countries. Children, in a controlled and supervised environment, would be given the choice to try depressants and mildly psychotropic drugs so it could be explained what they are feeling, and the various risks involved could be discussed more easily. I would go so far as to want to teach children the true dangers of addiction by giving out candies in the schools laced with highly addictive compounds so that they understand; when something is addictive it is NOT so easy to quit. Of course these compounds would be the safer ones with short detoxification periods, but it would be important they feel the withdrawal symptoms themselves to understand to the true power of addiction.
Only with adequate education can 'moral' people truly create a descent society. If most people knew half of the things they ignorantly endorsed by participating in this capitalism it'd be quite a bit harder for them to sleep at night.

It's been tried, and to some degree it works; but that requires a close and intimate relationship so that empathy can be established. If the children can feel for the other person's mistakes it is almost like making them on their own. As with any emotional connection, it's very hard to ensure each child make such a connection with a mentor who has experienced the mistakes- I dare say impossible. The only way to ensure that they truly understand the dangers is to expose them to them in a safe and controlled environment. Such exposure eliminates a large amount of curiosity that may eventually lead to the children exploring on their own away from safe adult supervision- resulting in dangers that wouldn't be present in a controlled environment such as the type of drugs, risks of overdose, severe addiction, lack of ready medical staff, etc. All precautions would be taken, and it must be understood that in an ideal society of my vision there would be nobody who has ruined their life by these means to share their experiences with the children anyway. The risks are minimal and the knowledge gained is priceless and undisputable- first hand experience is guaranteed to have an effect, there is no empathy variable.

"But who is going to pay for and regulate this? Do you want to give more power to the government?"
That's assuming my system has a traditional government. I'd have to explain it all out, but it's a semi-anarchic democratic socialism.

I remember back in my days in D.A.R.E., afterwards everyone knew what everything was, and everyone wanted to try everything!!! it only made things worse.

rex: my guardian angels, st. anthony and st. dominic defend me as does everybody elses. if God intended me to be defenseless, ie. not censorinng me from evil, then i suggest u do the same. there's enough chaos in the world for children to conform that it would be a blessing if every channel on cable would depict only the absolute true goodness. that will undoubtedly never happen which furthers the use of censorship by parents not only the media.
