Moshiach Ben David

Initially, more of what we Christians see as Messiah (prophetically speaking) were held by early Judaism. There is more then enough evidence to indicate that it was reinterpreted by Jewish Rabbi Rashi.

Scholars such as Raphael Patai show this in some of his works if anyone is interested.

reinterpreted it may be...but it doesn't take away from the fact that Jesus is not a jewish Moshiach, even by the definition of the such a role at the time of his ministry, and neither the moshiach ben yosef or ben david have to have supernatural abilities nor will they be "divine" in any way.

Isn't that what I said?
Although He may not be a Jewish Moshiach, He is Jewish and the Divine Moshiach to us. I'm perfectly content with the expectations while disagreeing about whether He was Divine or not. Nothing new to you, I'm sure.

The very first Christians were basically Messianic Jews.

There is a Messianic Jewish congregation here in Richmond, Virginia. They have a very informative website, in which they explain what they believe and why.

I personally don't see Judaism as being contrary to Christianity. I went to a Jewish synagogue several years ago, and really liked what I saw. My first boss was Jewish, and being around him gave me great insight into what it was like being Jewish. Most Christians that I know (myself included) have a deep love for the Jewish people. While we may differ over who the Messiah is/was, we worship the same God, and we share many of the same Scriptures.

when speaking in generalities there are a vast number of similarities between the 2 faiths, however, there are many differences in the faiths understanding of G-d, man's role in the world, the role of messiah and the role of mitzvot.

how many sects of christianity hold that the Law is no longer in effect?

Very true. I feel the biggest misinterpretation christianity has about Judaism is that it is an open ended religion, that it is somehow insufficiant, lacking or that it would change somehow. Nowhere in the Jewish bible does it say salvation is dependant upon the Moshiach. Nowhere in the Jewish bible does it say the law will be replaced or nullified. Nowhere in the Jewish bible does it say that Judaism would be replaced by another religion. Nowhere in the Jewish bible does it say the Moshiach would be a g0d/man.

i think the bigger misconception is that Judaism is just like Christianity sans-jesus.
