Doctrine and Covenants 34:3
".....Jesus Christ your Redeemer; The light and the life of the world, a light which shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not; Who so loved the world that he gave his own life, that as many as would believe might become the sons of God" John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." ---------------- The comparisons that I noticed was that in both of the verses of scriptures mention that God loved this world (His children) that He [God], gave His only begotten Son; Jesus Christ; so that whosoever believeth on His name will have everlasting life. Any other comparisons? Last edited by Bishka; 11-30-2006 at 12:44 AM. |

Out of curiosity, what is the context of the entire section where the Doctrine & Covenants passage is quoted from?

"Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to Orson Pratt, at Fayette, New York, November 4, 1830. Brother Pratt was nineteen years old at the time. He had been converted and baptized when he first heard the preaching of the restored gospel by his older brother, Parley P. Pratt, six weeks before. This revelation was received in the Peter Whitmer, Sen., home. Verses 1–4, The faithful become the sons of God through the atonement; Verses 5–9, Preaching of the gospel prepares the way for the Second Coming; Verses 10–12, Prophecy comes by the power of the Holy Ghost." Hope that helps. |

Becky, you know that I love you...so please don't take offense to this. I do have a question.
How is this really revelation...when it was already recorded in the Book of John? I don't really understand. I do understand that you're making a comparison but was Joseph Smith purposefully reiterating parts of the gospel or was this new revelation? I noticed when reading through my copy of the Book of Mormon that a lot of what was written is very similar to Biblical passages. The salvation message is essentially the same...salvation is found only in Christ Jesus. So, I'm totally with you there... I'm just curious about the revelation aspect of this. Is this restored gospel? Is this new gospel, according to Smith?

God can't repeat Himself?
![]() It was directed mainly at the people mentioned previously in the text of the revelation, that's why it is 'new'. To me I see all revelation from God as new. It may be the same message, but perhaps we need to see/here/listen to that message again. Edit: Kathryn would be able to explain it better then I, if I made no sense, which I'm sure is the case. ![]() |

For example, how many times does God say to keep the commandments? Or do love each other? Or that God/Jesus loves us? Quite a bit from my recollection, God is basically reiterating what He has always said, but there are those of us who are stubborn and don't listen or haven't heard it said quite like that before. How many times did you parents say the same thing to you over and over, but you didn't listen, and then finally, down the road you ended up listening? I hope that helps. ![]() |

Maybe someone else will bite and will point something out that I'm missing. Just wanted you to know that I'm really not trying to pick at you.
