...This has given me an idea for a thread...

I rarely listen to recordings of chants; Chants are most effective when executed in the proper setting, such as a temple, where the melodies of the chanters can truly blend in with the godly environment. Together, the chanting and environment effect a divinely inspirational experience.

Buddhist Chants
Lord Roghen -

I am a Nichiren Buddhist. Our primary meditation practice is reciting the mantra Namu Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo. We also recite different portions of the Lotus Sutra regularly.

There are a number of sound files and links particular to Nichiren Buddhism at this Yahoogroup: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nichirenpix/
They come from a variety of different Nichiren groups, and so there are some variations. Hope this is of interest.

P.S. - Frogo has it right; mantras are often fun to listen to, but you cannot really understand why someone would want to chant them until you try them out yourself, and it is always best to do so in company with others if this is available. Without doing so, the true power and effect of a mantra is not apparent, however nice they sound. Happy listening!

I have to agree... I didn't realize how calming Hare Krishna chants were until I sat down and just sang them at the top of my lungs with a friend.

My favorite is "Om Mani Pame Hum". ("Hail to the Bodhisattva Kuan Shih Yin".) I find that it helps me reach a meditative state very quickly!)

There is a short 4 line song the early Christians sang, in the book of Timothy speaking of our eternal security in Christ:

2:11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
(King James Bible, 2 Timothy)

Since He is in Us, He won't deny Himself or us. As far as chants, we are taught to avoid the vain repetitions of the Heathen, and not participate in that sort of meditation but to meditate WITH our minds.

Does that extend to hymns? If not, why are hymns exempt?

Don't know what you're missing.......

BTW all meditation is done with the mind; the physical circumstances are just different ways to achieve the end. Repetition of a mantra is one way, silent sitting is another, walking a labyrinth or a quiet path can be a third; all are different tools to do the same job. Just as I can use a hammer and a nail to join two boards together, I can also use a screwdriver and screw or a gluegun and glue to do the same thing. One may be somewhat better than another depending on the specifically desired result, but they all get the job done...........
