Funny you should say that, Mike. Rebecca told me the same thing about the death card. If you believe in it, with yes, my wife is making me a believer, it does have meaning. Even Christ himself stated about if you have faith, you could move mountains.

The I Ching is quite difficult, and really makes no sense unless you understand the chinese culture and mindset. I have read the I Ching many times, and while I feel tarot, runes, i ching, etc... are mere methods of meditation, I find the need to "know" the future a bit boring. But that's just me I guess.

Why does the Tarot work?

To answer this question we must first discuss some of the principles of consciousness:

1. Causation is always internal. No matter how it may appear at times, we create our own world, built according to our mental imagery. If we change our predominant images we will change our world.
2. A clear mental image tends to materialize itself as an actual condition or event.
3. A perfect record of all of our experiences is contained in our subconscious mind. Through its link to the Collective Unconsciousness, we have at our disposal an inexhaustable source of knowledge. This "collective" level is a source of the greater part of our intuitions or insights. In many instances, many modern "discoveries" are simply recoveries from it.
4. Subconsciousness will link us to whatever or whoever we need to achieve our goals. All the power you require in order to achieve your potential is yours NOW -- this very minute.
5. The operations of subconsciousness are controllable from the conscious level provided the right means to this end are used.

How does Tarot work?

Knowledge of the great powers of the Subconscious mind, and the methods of directing it are not new. In fact, many of these methods were used in ancient Egypt. In many respects the more ancient techniques are far superior and more effective than the methods developed recently.

The details of the methods for contacting the subconscious mind and channeling its awesome powers were, for centuries, the closely maintained secrets of small lodges of initiates. Only carefully selected and tested aspirants were admitted to these esoteric circles. Strict vows of secrecy and purity of motive were required before the methods of utilizing these powers were explained.

Is it the foretelling of the future or the method that bothers you more ?

I would have thought the idea of foretelling the future. It doesn't make sense does it ? I mean, how can one do so ? - Well, actually, you do it all the time. You know yourself (at least what your conscious tells you is yourself - your sub conscious might be more honest); you know your ways of thinking. By taking into account what you know you are like today, incorporating what you know your habits are, you can foretell the future.

A very easy example: You are tired this morning. You realize that your concentration is not good;. You are in a hurry to go to work, and although you know that more haste means 'less speed', you can't help yourself. You put the car keys down somewhere, when you wern't concentrating. Now you can't find them, and you confirmed what you predicted; you're going to be late for work; you foretold the future.

take this a further step down the line; you go and see a Tarot reader; that person uses the cards to help focus 'the higher self' on you, on your qualities (negative and positive). the reader can also understand your tendencies.

Take the present state of a person, understand their trends, and you can tell them the future.

Back to your bad morning; even without using a Tarot pack, I can see you rushing about in a bit of a state "I'm going to be late if I'm not careful" you keep saying. I see you unable to relax; I can predict you are going to be late.

BUT. But, you can change your future at any given moment - in this case, by unexpectedly saying to yourself "Now stop, Kathryn, you're being silly. Carry on like this, and you'll do something silly; calm down, take it easy, anfd things will work out" - and they do! you have changed the future.

If you went to see one Tarot reader, that one would give you a reading; you come out and on impulse think "I don't trust these people, I'll go to another" (This is a completely fresh thought - it had never occurred to you to think that way before. Go and see a second reader, and you will get a different reading, because you have changed the future.
