There are well over 800,000 Mormons in California, Matt. That's one in every 46 Californians. You've probably passed by LDS Churches on a number of occasions and not even realized it. As a matter of fact, there are more Mormons in California than in any other state in the U.S.

i rarely venture out of Marin County, and there are no LDS churches in my town, or in any of the neighboring towns.

I don't know how big your town is, but there are a number of LDS Churches in San Rafael. That's in Marin County, isn't it?

I just checked his town on a meeting house locator at lds.org. He's right. There are no wards in his town. San rafael has two wards, one meeting house.

There is a San Rafael Stake. On it's website, eight wards or branches are listed (two of them Spanish speaking).

All eight are in the San Rafael Stake. But you're probably right that they're not all in San Rafael. Are Novato, Petaluma and Rohnert Park towns near San Rafael? I don't know California all that well.
