Default How can this be?

1 jn.1:9- if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 jn.3:9- whosoever is born of god doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of god.

what do you do with these two verses contained within 2 chapters of each other? One says to confess and he will forgive you...the other says i cannot sin.

what to do? What to do!

i has to look up def. Of agnostic-a person who holds that the existance of the ultimate cause, as god, is unknown and unknowable. I disagree with that- all humanity is created to hang out with their creator- in my opinion. Otherwise whats it all for?

what i meant to say was that verse 3:9 is only talking about holy sons of God not having sin. i.e. Jesus of Nazareth. meanning that that verse probably does not apply to you. i wish some christians would answer you though.

Hi Luminous- i think this verse applies to all people who have believed and received the testimony of jesus' birth, death, resurrection, and indwelling life. I also think it applies to people who have never heard the name of jesus yet worship their creator as life-giver and sustainer. I wish chistians would answer too but i do appreciate your non-attack mode in your replys. Thanks.

God gives us a new life. This new life is like a birth...1 John 2:27 tells us that every baptized Christian has this anointing of the Holy Spirit. We become new persons who are born of God. The life that God gives is from God. And it is of his nature. God’s nature is opposed to sin...He cannot even look at us. But can again when Jesus' blood saves us. That is why the person born of God will not continue to desire to sin.

Christians are not perfect. It is still possible for them to sin. But sin will not be the normal pattern of their lives. This is all this means...and the true Christian is always working to gain victory over sin. Never will, but Jesus' is like a windshield wiper...He continues to cleanse if the person is trying....

I've been told that 3:9 is a continuous tense. That is, those who are born again do not continually sin. The point is that if we sin, we have an advocate, but that those who continually, flagrantly sin should not delude themselves into thinking that they have the Spirit of God.

1 John 8-10
If we make the statement: “We have no sin,” we are misleading ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous so as to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we make the statement: “We have not sinned,” we are making him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Is talking about whether the word of God is with you or not. If you make those 1st two statements then you are kidding yourself because there was only ever one perfect human that didnt sin and that was Jesus. Every other human being will sin, but if you accept that and then trust and believe in the ransom of Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness through that beleif for your sin, Jehovah God will forgive you

1 John 8-16
He who carries on sin originates with the Devil, because the Devil has been sinning from [the] beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was made manifest, namely, to break up the works of the Devil. Everyone who has been born from God does not carry on sin, because His [reproductive] seed remains in such one, and he cannot practice sin, because he has been born from God. The children of God and the children of the Devil are evident by this fact: Everyone who does not carry on righteousness does not originate with God, neither does he who does not love his brother. For this is the message which YOU have heard from [the] beginning, that we should have love for one another; not like Cain, who originated with the wicked one and slaughtered his brother. And for the sake of what did he slaughter him? Because his own works were wicked, but those of his brother [were] righteous. Do not marvel, brothers, that the world hates YOU. We know we have passed over from death to life, because we love the brothers. He who does not love remains in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a manslayer, and YOU know that no manslayer has everlasting life remaining in him. By this we have come to know love, because that one surrendered his soul for us; and we are under obligation to surrender [our] souls for [our] brothers.

So basically all this means is that those who are from God are evident by their deeds.

you cant just quote something out of context, you need to read the stuff around it to understand what it is saying.

That particular scripture means that A person of God does not go out to deliberately sin. We may do this occasionally but that is becasue we are imperfect, but then through yyour first quoted scripture, if you dont acknwledge and repent for your sins, then you are not one of God's people. His word is not with you, you are not living as a person of God. Both those scriptures avtually support each other and can be used to reason on whther your heart is lying with Jehovah or not.

I believe that the two verses are referring to different states of a persons spirit- dead or alive unto god. Some believe when john wrote this epistle he was addressing christians as well as gnostics who were denying that mankind was a sinner in his nature. Once our spirits are born again unto god it remains sealed by the holy spirit (which is continuously cleansing me, as a waterfall) until the day of bodily redemption. "it cannot sin" refers to this state. We still sin but that sin does not touch our spirit- it will effect our soulish realm and we walk in death yet still be clean before god. I do not want to sin anymore- i want to glorify my savior by allowing his spirit, which i am now united with, to live through me. As i focus my attention on him only he changes me from on degree of glory to another. Thank you for your input- god bless you all.

we need to remember that hte Christian greek scriptures were not written for all humans, they were written specifiaclly for the 144 000 and the fact that THEY go to heaven not the rest of us. We have the provisionand hope of everlasting life on a paradise earth.

However we need to know trust and believe in christs ransom sacrifice and then repent ofr our sins as part of Gods will is that all sinners attain to repentance.
